Following the BSB's issuing of its consultation paper on fees and charges for the authorisation and supervision of Authorised Education and Training Organisations (AETOs), the 2019 MTYBA committee produced the following response to the paper. The main issue raised by the consultation concerns the proposed moving of the ethics assessment from the vocational stage of training into pupillage. 

LGBT Rights In English Law, February 2019

In recognition of LGBT History Month, MTYBA’s Diversity and Equality Officer Ariana Caines has put together a factsheet of the history of the development of LGBT rights in English law.

“Intellectual Disability as a Defence to the Death Penalty – but is it?” by Laura Broome, January 2019

Laura was one of the winners of our 2018 Intern Awards and completed a capital defence internship in Texas in summer 2018. Here she writes about the exemption in US law from the death penalty for defendants suffering from “intellectual disability”, and the problems caused by the lack of legal definition.

MTYBA responds to Sexuality at the Bar report, June 2018

MTYBA produced the following report for Middle Temple's Equality, Diversity and Social Mobility Committee in response to the paper ‘Sexuality at the Bar: Experiences of LGBT+ Barristers in England and Wales’, produced by academics at the University of Westminster.

"Advocacy for asylum-seeking and refugee women in Malaysia at the CEDAW Comittee's 69th session" by Jaipreet Kaur, March 2018

Jaipreet was the winner of the Intern Award in 2017. She completed her internship at Asylum Access Malaysia. One of her tasks was to lead the drafting of submissions to the UN Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination of Women to assist in their review of Malaysia's compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women during their 69th session. She has here provided a summary of those submissions.

MTYBA responds to the Bar Standards Board's consultation on Future Bar Training, December 2017

Following the BSB's issuing of its consultation paper on Future Bar Training: Shaping the education and training requirements for prospective barristers, the 2017 MTYBA committee, in consultation with its membership, produced the following response to the paper. The issues raised are central to the future training of young barristers, and include topics such as membership of an Inn, pupillage funding and pupil supervision. 

"Challenging Institutional Corruption in Kenya as a Christian Lawyer" by Ricky Kimachia, December 2017

Ricky was a winner of the Intern Award in 2016. From October 2016 to April 2017,  Ricky worked as a full-time intern with CLEAR Kenya, an access-to-justice project ran by the Kenya Christian Lawyers’ Fellowship (“KCLF”), in partnership with the UK-based Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship (“LCF”).

Vanessa was a winner of the Intern Award in 2015. She completed her internship at the legal department of an international hotel chain in Hong Kong.

Kevin was a winner of the Intern Award in 2014. He completed his internship at the European Social Charter Department of the Council of Europe.

Sarah was a winner of the Intern Award in 2013. She completed her internship at the Women's Legal Centre, Cape Town.

Edmond was a winner of the Intern Award in 2013. He completed his internship at the European Space Agency, Paris.
