Online via Zoom (joining link will be circulated via email). This event is a Qualifying Session and is worth 1 point.

If you are a member of Middle Temple, sign up through Middle Temple’s Events page. Tickets are also available for members of other Inns and for non-barristers, book via Eventbrite here.

The event is run by the Middle Temple Young Barristers Association and Middle Temple Students Association, to celebrate Black History Month.

We hope the event will highlight the history of black history month, identify the barriers and struggles still faced by black people in the legal field, describe what positive initiatives are taking place to support improvements, as well as the impact recent global protests have had in many areas. The panel will discuss social justice and the realities of underrepresentation and overrepresentation within the justice system

Personal testimonies to be provided by the following encouraging barristers, who have had interesting paths to the bars/are leading positives initiatives currently:

  • Abimbola Johnson

  • Alexander Wilson

The following individuals will discuss interesting projects they have been involved with that try to remove barriers:

  • Aaron Mayers – Bridging the Bar

  • Brian Richardson – Black Lives Matter

  • Elisha Lindays – BSB Race Equality Taskforce

  • Master Elaine Banton – Bar Council Race Working Group & MT Anti-racism Committee

The session will conclude with a live song performance by Jael, allowing attendees some time to meditate on the educational information they have just heard.
