MTYBA's Third Annual Dinner
It is with great pleasure we announce that Lord Burnett of Maldon, the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, will be the guest speaker at MTYBA's Third Annual Dinner on the evening of Friday 26 October 2018.
Join us and your fellow young barristers in Middle Temple's Parliament Chamber for a three-course meal followed by an after-dinner speech from the Lord Chief Justice.
The dinner will be preceded by a drinks reception in the Queen's Room from 18:15 and we will be moving into the Parliament Chamber for dinner at 19:00. The dress code is Black Tie. There is likely to be a post-dinner venue booked for further socialising, details TBC.
Tickets are available to MTYBA members and their non-MTYBA guests.
If you have any dietary requirements, please inform us of them using the relevant buttons when booking your ticket. You will also be given the opportunity to express names of individuals or groups you wish to be seated with at dinner.

Practical Law CPD Series: Mental Health Law
On 1 May 2018, MTYBA will be hosting the first of three events in our Practical Law CPD series for 2018. This first part is all about Mental Health Law, where we'll be joined by Professor Neil Greenberg, a consultant occupational and forensic psychiatrist. Professor Greenberg served in the United Kingdom Armed Forces for more than 23 years and has deployed, as a psychiatrist and researcher, to a number of hostile environments including Afghanistan and Iraq. He also gave evidence in the recent 'Marine A' appeal. Joining him is Aswini Weereratne QC of Doughty Street Chambers, a specialist in mental health and capacity law, and since 2002 a Judge of the First Tier Tribunal (Health, Education and Social Care Chamber). The event promises to provide a fascinating insight into a critically important and cross-cutting area of law.

"Out of the Frying Pan..." First Six Pupillage
When: Thursday 20 September 2017, 18.30 onwards
Where: Taskers, Middle Temple
Who: Pupils to be/pupils just started
Why: Join us for a Q&A with a number of recent pupils on the best way to survive and succeed in your first six. The event will be held under Chatham House rules and alcoholic (and non-alcoholic) beverages will be provided, so its a great opportunity to get a "warts and all" account of what to expect for the first six months. Expect clear, direct and honest advice knowing that the panel been there before.

Join us for a Q&A with a number of recent tenants on the best way to survive and succeed in your second six. Pupillage Application Evening
Pupillage Application Evening – 25 January
MTYBA will once again be hosting a three-part Pupillage Application Programme to those of you applying this spring. The first event is our Pupillage Application Evening. This will be held on Thursday 25 January 2018 at 18.30.
We have a panel of experienced application-sifters from various Chambers sitting on our panel to answer your questions and provide some do's and don'ts and top tips on getting that all important invitation to interview. You will also be able to gain one-to-one advice and seek feedback on a draft of your current application.
For this event you are therefore welcome to bring your draft pupillage applications and CVs.
The event is being held in the Taskers on the 2rd floor of the Middle Temple Library.
The event is open to all MTYBA members.
Refreshments in the form of wine, soft drinks, tea, coffee and sandwiches will be provided. No RSVP necessary, just turn up!
The remaining two events in our programme take the form of mock pupillage interviews and mock advocacy exercises. Details to follow nearer the time.

An Introduction to Wellbeing at the Bar
MTYBA are providing an introductory session to our young barrister members on the Wellbeing at the Bar initiative. The session will be led by Master Louise McCullough and will focus on stress management techniques and consider a range of coping mechanisms to meet the demands of practice.
The event will begin at 18:30 with wine/non alocholic beverages provided. 1.5 hours CPD accreditation available.
MTYBA Employed Bar Panel & Networking Event – 19 October
On Thursday 19 October, MTYBA will be hosting a panel and networking event for practitioners at the Employed Bar.
The panel will consist of employed barristers giving their advice and insights, and will be available to take your questions.
The event will take place in the Sherrard Room, Ashley Building from 18.45. Complimentary refreshments will be available.
This event is for members of the Employed Bar, is free to attend and there is no need to RSVP.

Melinda Taylor: In Conversation
On Thursday 1 June 2017, MTYBA and The South Eastern Circuit present a conversation with Melinda Taylor.
Melinda is an Australian criminal lawyer who was arrested and detained in Libya in 2012 after being assigned by the International Criminal Court to defend Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Muammar Gaddafi.
The event will take place in The Queen's Room, Middle Temple from 18:30. Refreshments will be provided.

MTYBA and Urban Lawyers Advocacy Workshops: Launch Event
MTYBA and Urban Lawyers are launching their joint advocacy programme for University law students on 23 March 2017. The programme comprises three workshops providing the students with an introduction to advocacy skills.
The launch will be a 'top tips' and Q&A session with a panel of experienced advocates from a variety of practice areas. The panel session will be followed by a drinks reception at Middle Temple.

MTYBA at The Shard: A corporate crime update with Fulcrum Chambers
On Thursday 27 April 2017 MTYBA and Fulcrum Chambers are coming together to present a corporate crime CPD lecture at Fulcrum's office on the 25th floor of The Shard.
The talk will centre on direction post Rolls Royce DPA with other general views. The event will be opened by Fulcrum's David Huw Williams QC.
